ThursdayMarch 14, 2019-A Non-Government Organization has asked the government to abolish the Sh1,000 and Sh500 currency notes to boost the war on graft.
Addressing a press conferencein Eldoret town on Wednesday, Kipkorir Ngetich from the Center for Human Rightsand Democracy (CHRD), said many people had stolen money and hidden it outsidethe banks.
Ngetich said should the big denomination notesbe changed, those hiding them will be caught when they take them to the banksfor the new currency.
He also asked Parliament to initiate the processof changing the country’s currency and strengthen the legal framework to tacklecorruption.
“There are so many people who have stolen billions of shillingsand stashed the money under beds, in holes, bunkers and other areas. Much ofthe stolen money is in Sh1, 000 and Sh500 notes," Ngetich said
He said the war on graft will get a major boost if thegovernment targets money hidden in homes and that stashed abroad by thecorrupt.
The activist alsocommended President Uhuru Kenyatta for giving the best ever political supportto independent institutions fighting graft.
