James Charles is taking full accountability after Tati Westbrook accused him of betraying their friendship, and doubts that he can ‘ever earn that friendship or trust back.’
James Charles, 19, owes Tati Westbrook, 37, an apology. That’s what he confesses at the beginning of an eight-minute video, which he uploaded to YouTube on May 10, just hours after his fellow beauty YouTuber officially ended their friendship for a myriad of reasons, which included James promoting SugarBearHair at Coachella on April 22. The shout-out “blindsided” Tati, who owns a rival vitamin company, Halo Beauty. “To Tati and James Westbrook, I’m sorry for everything that is going on, everything that I’ve put you through over the past few weeks,” James began in his apology video, and revealed how far back his friendship with the married couple goes.
Before James reached 16 million subscribers, he met Tati and her husband almost three years ago when he was still on the rise in the influencer industry. The beauty guru revealed that Tati, who has six million subscribers, “took on a parental role” and supported him “when no one else wanted to.” With that said, James confessed, “I’m so disappointed in myself that I ruined my relationship that did mean the most to me, even though I didn’t show it all the time…What sucks the most is that I know there’s nothing I can say or do to ever earn that friendship or trust back.”
At one point, James breaks down into tears — you can watch the full video above. This isn’t the Internet personality’s first apology to Tati, however. In an Instagram Story post on April 23, James regretted his post for SugarBearHair’s Sleep Vitamins but denied that he profited off the picture. “This weekend I did an Instagram story for sleep vitamins that I’ve been taking because the brand helped me with security when the crowd around me at Coachella became unsafe. I did not accept any money from this post. Tati has a vitamin brand which I take on a daily basis, but in the moment, I did not think about the competition,” he explained.
However, Tati insisted that her issues with James go beyond the vitamin controversy. “There’s so much going on with James Charles right now that I do not support. I do not agree with,” James’ longtime mentor said in her tell-all video on May 10. She added, “Fame, power, and a fat bank account will change almost anyone. And if you don’t have people that will tell you to your face that you’re doing the wrong things, you will change. I tried to be that person for you James, I really tried. I don’t think there’s any getting through to you, and I don’t want to be friends with you. I don’t want to be associated with you.”
